Since 1993 Renato has developed 2 unique materials and techniques that have made it possible for people around the world to acquire his carvings. That year he invented “Novapiedra” a stucco like substance which combines the regional, limestone like, raw material “Sascab” with resins and other ingredients. This material, soft and pasty at first, gradually becomes as hard as stone, able to withstand extreme temperatures, including hurricanes. As the material becomes increasingly harder it also allows for carving in greater detail. The demand for Renato´s carvings grew rapidly, especially among the areas hotels, restaurants, offices and private homes. His work included classic and contemporary monuments, statues, murals, fountains and wall hangings (see Renato´s personal website). Once we opened our first gallery, in 1999, we immediately found that visitors from abroad also were interested in Renato´s work. The problem was that the carvings were just too heavy to carry on the plane and too expensive to ship.

Since “Necessity is the mother of invention”, there was a growing need to create a material that would not only be lightweight but also be extremely faithful to the original carvings (i.e. fiberglass is lightweight but very limited in achieving the needed details). So, after a year of experimenting and testing, the answer was found…”Fiberstone”
