Renato expresses, through a collage of organic forms, his interpretation of Contemporary Mayan Art in relief. In these limited edition works he uses a modern approach to the ancient culture by playing with and interweaving Mayan and Caribbean themes. Each signed piece is elaborated in Fiberstone * and finished with an exclusive antiquing process under Renato’s supervision.

* Is the name given to a unique process that permits the reproduction, in limited series, of original carvings. These extremely detailed works of  art are lightweight yet highly resistant to the elements, allowing for their use in exterior as well as interior areas.

CLASSIC MAYAN ART COLLECTION

February 16, 2009

Since 1993, Renato and his team of carvers have been transforming Mayan stele drawings into 3-dimensional, limited series, high quality reproductions. Through the application of an exclusive lightweight and stone-like material Fiberstone* and through his extreme attention to minute detail, Renato has been able to preserve the essence of original Mayan carvings and sculptures. The work is further enhanced by a unique antiquing process that helps to visually recreate and preserve pre-Hispanic art.

Renato’s original and limited series works include a Certificate of Authenticity.

The Fiberstone Process

1. Each original stele is carved in stone by Mayan artists trained in our workshops in Cancun. The depth of relief emphasizes the details found in the original. In situations where the original steles were either lost or destroyed, our artists have the capacity to study and recreate faithful replicas from 2 dimensional sketches and drawings.

2. Mold-making is an art in itself and only with the finest material and highly trained artisans can one expect to reproduce the newly carved steles to perfection.

3. The principal material is a combination of natural raw materials used by the Mayans in the construction of the pyramids plus resins and fibers. The semi-dry mixture is hand pressed into the mold and cured overnight.

4. Once removed from the mold the stele is inspected personally, by Artistic Director Renato Dorfman, to determine what final touches are necessary. A specialist then applies 3-4 coats of antiquing followed by the sealant.

The resulting stele looks and feels like the stone original, yet is lightweight, making it economical to ship overseas, as an artistic representation of the ancient Mayan Civilization.
